The Logo

THE LOGO OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP WAS CREATED BY DIMITRIS MARATOS AND WAS INSPIRED BY ANCIENT BURIAL POTTERY PIECES DATED FROM THE  EARLY 3RD MILLENIUM BC (2800 - 2300 BC) THAT WERE FOUND ON THE ISLAND OF SYROS IN CHALANDRIANI, WHERE 600 GRAVES WERE DISCOVERED.

THE CENTRAL THEMES IN THE DECORATION OF THE PAN SHAPED OBJECTS ARE ROWING VESSELS, WITHOUT SAIL, WITH A FISH SHAPE OVER THEIR HIGH BOW SURROUNDED BY SPIRALS, WHICH PROBABLY PRESENT WAVES.

A PUBIC TRIANGLE DECORATES THE HANDLE. THE LATTER SYMBOL OF FERTILITY REFERS TO THE RITUAL AND MAGIC CHARACTER OF THE OBJECTS.

THESE PIECES WERE PROBABLY ALSO USED AS MIRRORS WHEN THEIR CURVED SIDE WAS FILLED WITH WATER. THE CARVINGS REFLECT THE NAVAL SUCCESS OF THE PEOPLE OF SYROS FROM THIS EARLY TIME.
