Great Britain

Great Britain is going to have a full team this year in the WC, with Kevin Baly, Ross Gilfillan and Fabio Pizzoccheri.

Kevin started snorkelling with his father in Cape Town at the age of 11. Whilst he had a small speargun in those early years, he had very little luck with spearing fish and mostly just dived for crayfish and perlemoen (abalone).

After his family moved to another town in South Africa, he stopped diving but was still passionate about fishing with a rod and line. It was only after returning to Cape Town to study at University that he seriously got into spearfishing.

After finishing his studies, he moved to Durban for work and went spearfishing at every moment possible. After a few years in Durban, he moved to Australia for a year and freedived for a living on the Barrier Reef collecting trochus shells and sea cucumbers.

He then settled in the United Kingdom and started competing locally. After a few years, he received his British Citizenship and began competing in a few of the international competitions. He took part in the Euro-African Championships of 2007, 2011, 2015 and the World Championships of 2008, 2010 and 2012. His best position was the 13th in the WC of 2008 in Margarita, Venezuela.

Kevin was national champion in Britain in the years 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Ross grew up in South Africa and dived with his family from a young age. After settling in the United Kingdom in 2000, he has enjoyed the warm hospitality of the British diving community. He has high hopes that his daughters will grow up to enjoy the sport. This is Ross’s first international competition

Fabio started spearfishing at a young age in the Mediterranean sea where over the years he has dived with some of the best Italian spear fishermen, including his cousin Alberto Pizzoccheri, who was one of the top fishermen in Italy in the ‘80s. Over the last ten years, Fabio has been spearfishing mainly in the English Channel although he always enjoys going back to the clear and deep waters of the Mediterranean sea hunting for dentex and groupers.
