Greece

 

Greece will be hosting the 30th World Spearfishing Championship and hopes to make the most out of its 20th participation in the institution. Best team result up to now in a WC was the 4th place in the World Championship of Mali Losinj in 2010 and the 6th place in Venezuela in 2008, Vigo 2012 and Peru 2014.

The Greeks are eager to improve their record in the WC and the event in their home waters presents their best opportunity to do so.

The team will rely on Giannis Sideris (silver medal in 2008, 7th place in 2010), Manolis Giankos (9th in 2012), Gerasimos Kavvadias and Nikos Sarantinos to realise its goals in this WC. The team will be assisted by Labros Dertilis (5 international caps) and 2016 Master in Mallorca Tassis Peroulis (3 international caps).

Captain of the team will be former Greek national champion Roberto Calich (12th place in the WC of 1992 in Mallorca).

ROBERTO CALICH

Roberto Calich was born in Istanbul in 1961 from Greek parents. In 1979 he migrated to Greece and has been living in Athens ever since. He was an athlete of Vouliagmeni Nautical Club with the colors of which he won the national title in spearfishing (1983,1984,1990 only team event took place in Greece from 1983 -1994). Roberto wore the colors of the Greek national spearfishing team 11 times from 1983 until 1992 (4 WCs and 7 editions of the Euroafrican Cup). 

Roberto is a ***CMAS  and an “Apnea Academy” Apnea instructor and a *** Hellenic Federation Spearfishing instructor.

GIANNIS SIDERIS

Giannis Sideris was born in Kranidi, Pelopones in 1975. He is the active legend of Greek competitive spearfishing with 7 national individual titles and a silver WC Medal (2008). He competes for the nautical club of Porto Heli and has been selected 9 times to represent the Greek national colors in international competitions.

Giannis is an *FDI Apnea instructor.

MANOLIS GIANKOS

Manolis Giankos was born in Volos in 1978. He is 4 times national individual champion in Greece and has a gold Euroafrican Medal from 2013. He competes for the nautical club of Syros and has been selected 6 times to represent Greece in international spearfishing championships. Manolis has competed in Freediving events in the past and has achieved numerous honours. His recorded PB in the constant weight discipline is 100 m and in the dynamic apnea discipline 203 m.

Manolis is a ***CMAS  and an “Apnea Academy”, AIDA, SSI and FDI freediving instructor and a *** Hellenic Federation Spearfishing instructor.

·         2013. Greek national champion (individual and teams). Euroafrican Champion in Helsinki. 2nd team place in the Euroafrican in Helsinki. 3rd team place in the Trofeo de las 5 Naciones in Mallorca.

·         2014. Greek national champion. 22nd in the WC in Peru

·         2015. 15th in the  Euroafrican in Cadiz  

GERASIMOS KAVVADIAS

Gerasimos was born in Corfu in 1982. He moved very young with his family to Thessaloniki where he lived up to the time he was given a position as a biology teacher in a Herakleion (Crete) high school. He has been living on the beautiful island of Crete ever since, enjoying the clear and warm water of its coastline and catching his share of the fish that is said to be plentiful there. Gerasimos practically started his competing career only in 2014 in the nationals that took place in Corfu. He competes for the Corfu Nautical Club and is the youngest regular member of the Greek Team and has been the reserve in Peru and in Cadiz. After two international appearences in the nations cup of Mali Losinj in 2014 and 2015, Gerasimos seems ready to represent the home colors with success.

·         2015. Silver Medal in the Greek National Championship. Greek National Champion (teams). Reserve athlete in the Euroafrican in Cadiz. 2nd individual and team place in the Nations Cup of Mali Losinj.

NIKOS SARANTINOS

Nikos was born in Heracleion, Crete on 4-4-1982. He has once (2008) achieved a placement on the podium of the Greek national individual championship. He competes for the nautical club of Eleftherios Venizelos in Chania Crete and has been selected 2 times to represent Greece in international spearfishing championships. His best achievement was the 30th position in the 2009 Euroafrican in Tipasa.

Nikos is a *CMAS  and an FDI freediving instructor and a * Hellenic Federation Spearfishing instructor.

·         2008. Bronze Medal in the Greek National Championship.  

·         2009. 30th place in the Euroafrican in Tipasa.

·         2010. 4th team place in the WC in Mali Losinj.            

      

LABROS DERTILIS 

Labros was born in the USA on 14-4-1977. He has two times (2012 and 2013) achieved a placement on the podium of the Greek national individual championship. He competes for the nautical club of Kekrops Ag. Arina and has been selected 5 times to represent Greece in international spearfishing championships. His best achievement was the 21st position in the 2010 WC in Mali Losinj.

           2002. 26th place in the WC in Brazil 

·         2010. 21st place in the WC in Mali Losinj and 4th team place.

       2011. 31st place in the Euroafrican in Peniche and 3rd team place. 

     2012.  Bronze Medal in the Greek National Championship.

       2013.  Silver Medal in the Greek National Championship. 37th place in the Euroafrican in Helsinki and 2nd team place.

      TASIS PEROULIS 

Tasis was born in Corfu on 16-3-1984. He competes for the nautical club of Corfu and has been selected 3 times to represent Greece in international spearfishing championships. His best achievement was the 1st position in the 2016 Master de Pescasubmarina tournament in Mallorca, one of the most prestigeous individual events on the planet.

           2014. 4th place (individual) and 2nd place (teams) in the Nations' Cup in Mali Losinj and 6th place (teams) in the New Year's Cup of Towns  

·         2015. 2nd team place in the Nations' Cup in Mali Losinj and 3rd place (teams) in the New Year's Cup of Towns.

       2016. 3rd team place in the Nations' World Cup in Mallorca and 1st place in the Masters de Pescasubmarina tournament.
